Recorded on 12 January 1963 in Miami in front of a predominantly Black audience, the tape preserves a version of Cooke that his hit records only hinted at: gritty, sweating, gospel-loud, working the room rather than the crossover market. RCA thought the performance was too raw to release alongside the smooth studio sides that were selling millions, and shelved it.
