Collection: Genesis Vinyl Records – Selling England by the Pound, Invisible Touch & More on Vinyl
Genesis are one of the few bands to have dominated two entirely different eras of popular music. Formed at Charterhouse School in 1967 around the songwriting partnership of Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford, they spent their first decade as pioneers of progressive rock — crafting sprawling, theatrical compositions that pushed the boundaries of what a rock band could attempt. With Peter Gabriel on vocals and Steve Hackett on guitar, they produced some of the most ambitious music of the 1970s.
When Phil Collins stepped from behind the drum kit to take lead vocals in 1975, Genesis reinvented themselves as one of the biggest pop-rock bands on the planet. The transition was remarkable: few groups have moved from 23-minute prog epics to global hit singles without losing their identity. On vinyl, both eras reward deep listening — the prog albums demand side-long attention spans, while the pop-era records are immaculately produced. A recent heavyweight vinyl reissue campaign has made the entire catalogue accessible again.

Best Genesis Albums on Vinyl
Foxtrot (1972)The album where Genesis found their voice. Watcher of the Skies opens with one of prog's most iconic keyboard introductions, and the record builds to Supper's Ready — a 23-minute suite that remains the band's most audacious composition. Peter Gabriel's theatrical vocals and Steve Hackett's pioneering guitar work are at their peak. Essential vinyl for any prog collection.
Selling England by the Pound (1973)Often cited as the finest Genesis album, and hard to argue otherwise. Every track is immaculate, from the pastoral folk of More Fool Me to the epic sweep of Firth of Fifth — whose keyboard solo is one of the most celebrated passages in progressive rock. Rich, detailed, and beautifully sequenced for vinyl listening.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974)Gabriel's final statement with the band: an ambitious double album telling the surreal story of Rael's journey through a phantasmagoric New York. Dense, theatrical, and unlike anything else in rock music. The 2025 50th anniversary reissue features a remastered mix overseen by Gabriel and Banks.
Invisible Touch (1986)The commercial peak. Phil Collins-era Genesis at their most polished and immediate — Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Land of Confusion, and the title track were inescapable hits. Beneath the pop sheen, the musicianship is still unmistakably Genesis. One of the best-selling albums of the 1980s.
