32 Essential Hip-Hop Vinyl Records, Ranked
Share
Hip-hop and vinyl are inseparable. The genre was born on wax — built by DJs and producers crate-digging through funk and soul records for breakbeats — and it remains one of the most-collected genres on vinyl today. This guide picks thirty-two essential hip-hop records currently in stock at Viking Records, covering the full span of the genre from the 1986 old-school foundations through the 1990s classics to contemporary chart-toppers.
The picks are grouped by era and region — contemporary hip-hop bestsellers first, then 2000s commercial peak, 1990s East Coast and West Coast classics, the foundational old-school and Golden Age records, the underground and indie traditions, and a closing section on UK hip-hop.
For deeper artist coverage, our MF DOOM vinyl guide goes into the catalogue of one of hip-hop's most influential underground figures in detail. The general principles apply across this list: original pressings are highly prized, modern remasters and anniversary editions are usually the most accessible route in, and watch out for bootlegs of the highest-profile records.

Honourable mentions and where to go next
Viking stocks 90+ hip-hop records — well beyond the 32 above. A few additional standouts worth considering:
Kendrick Lamar — good kid, m.A.A.d city (10th Anniversary 2xLP). Kendrick's major-label debut and many fans' favourite of his catalogue.
Kendrick Lamar — DAMN. (Polydor Gatefold 2xLP). The Pulitzer-winning 2017 record.
MF DOOM — Operation: Doomsday (2xLP). DOOM's 1999 debut after King Geedorah — where the supervillain persona first arrived.
Eric B. & Rakim — Paid In Full (1987, 180g 2xLP). The Rakim era — many consider him the most influential rapper of all time on writing technique alone.
Fugees — The Score (1996, Reissue 2xLP). One of the best-selling hip-hop albums of the 90s; the Lauryn Hill launchpad.
Little Simz — Grey Area (Vinyl LP). Little Simz's third album, the breakthrough before Sometimes I Might Be Introvert.
Massive Attack — Blue Lines (Remastered LP). Bristol trip-hop's foundational record — sits at the boundary of hip-hop, electronic and soul.
Jay-Z — The Black Album (Original US Pressing 2xLP). Jay-Z's 2003 "retirement" album with production from Just Blaze, Rick Rubin, Kanye, Timbaland and more.
Eminem — The Slim Shady LP (180g 2xLP). The debut that turned Eminem into a household name.
Where to start
If you're building a hip-hop vinyl collection from scratch, four starting points cover the genre's breadth: Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly for contemporary, Nas's Illmatic for the 90s East Coast peak, Dr. Dre's The Chronic for the 90s West Coast, and Public Enemy's It Takes A Nation Of Millions for the foundational politically-charged tradition. After a few weeks with those four, the rest of this list will sort itself by which corner of the genre you most want to explore.
Hip-hop overlaps strongly with soul, funk and R&B — our Soul, Funk & R&B vinyl collection is worth a browse for the foundations producers like J Dilla, Madlib and Q-Tip were sampling from. For broader context on the genre, the Wikipedia overview of hip-hop music is a solid factual starting point.
