Description

Midnight Marauders is A Tribe Called Quest's third studio album and, for many, the pinnacle of their extraordinary run through the early 1990s. Released on 9 November 1993 via Jive Records, it arrived on the crest of a creative wave — following the landmark The Low End Theory (1991) — and delivered one of the most assured, immaculately produced and endlessly listenable hip-hop albums ever made. It debuted at number eight on the US Billboard 200 and reached number one on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, going on to achieve Platinum certification in the United States.

Where The Low End Theory had stripped the sound back to bass and beats, Midnight Marauders was richer and more layered — a warm, late-night record built from Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad's intricate jazz sampling, elastic bass lines and a sonic palette that felt simultaneously sophisticated and deeply accessible. The production is remarkable throughout: every track breathes, grooves and rewards close listening in equal measure.

The album opens with the hypnotic, instantly iconic "Steve Biko (Stir It Up)" and rarely lets up. "Electric Relaxation" — built around a Ron Carter sample — is one of the most effortlessly cool tracks in all of hip-hop; "Award Tour" features Trugoy the Dove of De La Soul and became one of the group's biggest hits; "Oh My God" showcases Busta Rhymes at his most explosively energetic; and "We Can Get Down" is a masterclass in understated groove. Q-Tip and Phife Dawg's interplay is at its most natural and assured throughout — two distinct voices, perfectly complementary, at the height of their powers.

Widely ranked among the greatest hip-hop albums ever recorded — appearing on countless best-of lists including Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All TimeMidnight Marauders has lost none of its warmth, intelligence or vitality in the three decades since its release. This 2025 Jive/Sony reissue presents the album on limited edition yellow vinyl, a vivid and collectible pressing of a true classic.
