Paul Weller's first great band, and the one that proved punk and mod could coexist brilliantly. The Jam channelled The Who, The Kinks, and early Small Faces through a post-punk filter and came out sounding entirely their own.
Weller's songwriting grew at an extraordinary pace — from the raw energy of In The City to the sophisticated pop of Sound Affects in just four years. They split at their commercial peak, which was either mad or the coolest thing a band has ever done. Probably both.
