Nevermind (1991) — The album that killed hair metal overnight. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium — it's front-loaded with era-defining tracks and doesn't let up. The 180g pressing has serious weight to it.

In Utero (1993) — Cobain's deliberate swerve away from Nevermind's polish. Steve Albini's production is abrasive and confrontational, but Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies show the melodies were still there. A brave, brilliant record.

MTV Unplugged In New York (1994) — Haunting, stripped-back, and devastating in hindsight. The covers of Bowie, Leadbelly, and Meat Puppets sit alongside reimagined originals. One of the greatest live albums ever recorded.

Bleach (1989) — The debut. Heavier and more punk than what came after, but the songwriting talent is already obvious. About A Girl could've been a Beatles tune. Raw and essential.
