SZA — Solána Imani Rowe — is one of the defining voices of modern R&B. Born in St Louis and raised in New Jersey, she came up through Top Dawg Entertainment's golden run alongside Kendrick Lamar, Isaiah Rashad and ScHoolboy Q, bringing a looser, more experimental sensibility to the label's sound.

Her full-length debut CTRL (2017) rewrote what contemporary R&B could sound like — warm, conversational, gently off-kilter — and the long-awaited follow-up SOS (2022) took that approach into genuine pop-culture ubiquity. SZA's records reward vinyl for the production detail: soft guitars, open drum kits, layered harmonies. The CTRL Deluxe and SOS coloured-vinyl reissues are the ones to own.

Her debut and still her most influential album. Love Galore, The Weekend, Drew Barrymore — songs that rewrote the rules of confessional R&B. Featuring Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott and Isaiah Rashad. The 5th Anniversary Deluxe edition with bonus tracks is essential.

Lana (2024)
The SOS Deluxe edition, expanded into a standalone release with new material including Saturn and Diamond Boy. Released on indie-store-exclusive green vinyl, it captures her at the peak of her powers.

Z (2014)
The pre-CTRL TDE EP that introduced her sound. Babylon, Warm Winds (with Isaiah Rashad), and Child's Play — worth tracking down for a clear picture of where the SZA aesthetic came from.
