Operation: Doomsday is the debut solo studio album from MF DOOM — the masked, enigmatic figure born Daniel Dumile — released in 1999 on Fondle ‘Em Records and subsequently reissued on Metal Face and Rhymesayers Entertainment. It is one of the foundational records of underground hip-hop: a dense, sample-heavy, wildly inventive album that announced the arrival of one of rap’s most singular and influential voices. After the death of his brother and collaborator DJ Subroc and his subsequent dropping by Elektra Records, Dumile retreated from the industry entirely before re-emerging behind a metal mask as MF DOOM.

The album weaves together comic book references, Fantastic Four villain samples, and some of the most verbally dexterous rapping ever committed to record. Tracks like “Doomsday”, “Rhymes Like Dimes”, “Gas Drawls”, and “Dead Bent” remain touchstones of the genre. DOOM’s influence on subsequent generations of hip-hop artists — from Earl Sweatshirt to Tyler, the Creator — is incalculable.
