Description
Black on Both Sides is the solo debut by Mos Def (now known as Yasiin Bey), released on Rawkus Records following his acclaimed collaboration with Talib Kweli as Black Star. The album established Mos Def as one of the most versatile and intellectually ambitious voices in hip-hop, blending sharp lyrical observation with an eclectic musical palette that drew on jazz, rock, R&B and Afrobeat.
Mathematics is a dense, statistically driven track that addresses systemic inequality through a barrage of numbers and facts over a DJ Premier beat. Ms. Fat Booty became the album's crossover hit, its storytelling and Aretha Franklin sample making it one of the era's most memorable singles. Fear Not of Man opens the album with a spoken-word meditation on the state of hip-hop. Know That and Speed Law showcase Mos Def's technical skill as an MC, while Umi Says is a soulful, uplifting anthem. Rock N Roll traces the African-American roots of rock music.
