Description
Up All Night is the debut studio album by Razorlight — Johnny Borrell (vocals, guitar), Björn Ågren (guitar, vocals), Carl Dalemo (bass, vocals) and Christian Smith-Pancorvo (drums) — originally released on 28 June 2004 on Vertigo Records. Recorded primarily at Sawmills Studio in Cornwall and Sphere Studios in London, and produced, engineered and mixed by John Cornfield — who had previously worked with The Verve on A Storm in Heaven and Supergrass on I Should Coco and In It for the Money — the album announced Razorlight as one of the most compelling new British bands of the mid-2000s indie explosion. It debuted at number three on the UK Albums Chart and has since been certified four times Platinum in the UK, with over one million sales — remarkable figures for a debut on an independent-distributed label, and a testament to the staying power of the songs at its core.
The album arrived at a moment of particular ferment in British indie rock, with the influence of The Strokes and The Libertines having reshaped what guitar music could sound like and what audiences were hungry for. Razorlight absorbed these influences without being consumed by them: Borrell's songwriting had a sharp, aphoristic quality — street poetry delivered with the conviction of someone who genuinely believed in the romance of rock and roll — and Cornfield's production gave the band a live immediacy and directness that suited the material well. Critics were divided on originality but united on impact: NME praised Borrell's sharp street poetry and the band's energy, Rolling Stone called it a "brilliant mod explosion of scruffy pub punk," and The Guardian noted that while originality may not have been the band's strong suit, Borrell's charisma carried the day. The album was named Best New Band at both the NME Awards and the Q Awards in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
The album spawned six singles. "Rock 'N' Roll Lies" was the band's debut single (August 2003), setting out their stall with furious economy. "Rip It Up" and "Stumble and Fall" followed before the album's release, building momentum through late 2003 and early 2004. "Golden Touch" — the album's most melodically direct and commercially accessible track — became their highest-charting single to that point, with a Top of the Pops performance just days before the album's release helping drive it up the charts. "Vice" rounded out the campaign. "Somewhere Else" — recorded separately, with band tracking at Sphere Studios, vocals at Abbey Road, and crowd noise at Brixton Academy — was released as a standalone single and added to the 2005 re-release of the album; it is included on this anniversary edition, bringing the track count to 14. Three tracks on this pressing use the Sawmills 04 versions, reflecting the original demo/session recordings from Cornwall.
This 20th Anniversary Edition on UMR / EMI presents the complete 14-track deluxe album on crystal clear vinyl, released to coincide with Razorlight's 20th anniversary touring programme, which included a Brixton Academy headline date. Made in the EU.
