Maurice White built Earth, Wind & Fire into one of the most successful crossover acts of the 1970s by fusing horn-driven funk, gospel-derived vocal arrangements, jazz harmony and a distinct cosmic-Egyptian aesthetic into something nobody else was doing. The mid-70s run from That's the Way of the World through I Am produced some of the most enduring dance and soul records of the era.

The Phenix Horns' arrangements and the layered Bailey-White vocal harmonies need the LP format to land properly — these records were cut for a club PA system, and they reward serious playback equipment.
