Collection: The Seahorses Vinyl Records – Do It Yourself on 180g Vinyl

The Seahorses were the band John Squire formed in 1996 after he walked away from The Stone Roses. The line-up — Squire on guitar, Chris Helme on vocals, Stuart Fletcher on bass and Andy Watts on drums — came together quickly, was snapped up by Geffen, and recorded their debut with Tony Visconti at the controls. Helme had been discovered busking in York, and his warm, unaffected voice turned out to be the perfect counterpart to Squire's playing.

Do It Yourself appeared in May 1997 and went straight into the UK top three. Love Is the Law, Blinded by the Sun, Love Me and Leave Me (co-written with Liam Gallagher) and the closing Hello all became staples of late-90s British rock radio. For a moment The Seahorses looked like they would be one of the biggest British guitar bands of the decade.

The second album was recorded but never released — tensions in the band brought things to a halt in early 1998 and The Seahorses split before it could be finished. Do It Yourself is therefore the whole story on record. The 180g Music On Vinyl reissue captures Visconti's production beautifully: clean guitars, warm vocals, a record that sounds remarkably good on a proper turntable.
