Collection: Whitney Houston Vinyl Records – Whitney Houston, Whitney & Essential Albums on Vinyl

Whitney Houston had one of the greatest voices ever recorded. Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1963, daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and cousin of Dionne Warwick, her technical vocal ability — range, agility, power, breath control — has genuinely never been surpassed in popular music. Signed by Clive Davis to Arista in 1983, her 1985 self-titled debut sold over 25 million copies and produced three number-one singles.

The follow-up Whitney (1987) became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one in the US. The Bodyguard soundtrack (1992) is still the best-selling soundtrack of all time. The career had its troubled later years, but the vocal performances on record are untouchable. Houston died in 2012 at 48. On vinyl, her records are a masterclass in 80s pop production — layered harmonies, immaculate arrangements, and the close-miked voice carrying everything. The Arista originals and the recent 180g reissues are consistently excellent.

Best Whitney Houston Albums on Vinyl

Whitney Houston (1985)
The debut. How Will I Know, Saving All My Love for You, Greatest Love of All, You Give Good Love — one of the best-selling debuts in pop history, and the record that announced her as a generational voice. Essential.

Whitney (1987)
The second album. I Wanna Dance with Someone, Didn't We Almost Have It All, So Emotional, Where Do Broken Hearts Go — producing four consecutive US number-one singles, a record run. Arguably even better than the debut.

The Bodyguard — Original Soundtrack Album (1992)
Her most commercially successful record, and one of the best-selling albums of all time. I Will Always Love You (the Dolly Parton cover), I Have Nothing, Run to You, I'm Every Woman — six of the twelve tracks are Whitney. Essential.

I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990)
The album that reinvented her for the new-jack-swing era. The title track, All the Man That I Need, Miracle — produced with L.A. Reid and Babyface. More contemporary than her 80s records and genuinely excellent.

My Love Is Your Love (1998)
The fourth studio album and her most R&B-focused record. It's Not Right But It's Okay, Heartbreak Hotel (with Faith Evans and Kelly Price), the title track — collaborating with Wyclef Jean, Missy Elliott and Rodney Jerkins. Often considered her best late-career work.
