Under Rug Swept is the fifth studio album by Alanis Morissette, released on 26 February 2002 on Maverick Records, and the most assertively self-determined record of her career to that point. For the first time, Morissette took sole writing and production credits across the entire album — an unusual degree of creative ownership for a major label artist — composing all eleven tracks herself and producing with assistance from a small team of collaborators. The result is a tightly focused, emotionally intense record that strips back some of the layered production of her earlier work in favour of directness.

The album's lead single "Hands Clean" — a frank examination of an unequal relationship framed with deceptive melodic warmth — was a substantial hit on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching number one in Canada and the top five in the UK. "Precious Illusions", the second single, followed as a more introspective complement, while album tracks like "21 Things I Want in a Lover", "Flinch" and "Surrendering" demonstrate the range of a songwriter at the height of her powers. The album sold over 3.8 million copies worldwide by 2004.
