Facelift is the debut studio album from Alice in Chains, released in August 1990 on Columbia Records, and one of the foundational records of the grunge movement. Arriving a year before Nirvana’s Nevermind would reshape the commercial landscape of rock music, Facelift introduced the world to Layne Staley’s extraordinary vocals and Jerry Cantrell’s distinctive guitar tone — a combination of heaviness and melody that would prove enormously influential. The album’s breakout single, “Man in the Box”, became an MTV staple and remains one of the most recognisable songs of the era.
