Description

Frank is the debut studio album from Amy Winehouse, originally released in October 2003 on Island Records. It reached number thirteen on the UK Albums Chart and earned Winehouse her first BRIT Award nominations, announcing an artist whose voice and writing were already fully formed at twenty. Named after Frank Sinatra — one of Winehouse’s earliest musical obsessions — the album blends jazz, hip-hop, and soul into something that felt entirely her own.

Produced primarily by Salaam Remi, with additional production from Commissioner Gordon and Jimmy Hogarth, the record opens with Stronger Than Me (which won the 2004 Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song) and moves through the extended, sample-heavy You Sent Me Flying / Cherry, the sharp-tongued Fuck Me Pumps, and the jazz standard (There Is) No Greater Love. The album closes with Amy Amy Amy (Outro), a thirteen-minute piece built around interpolations of jazz standards. Throughout, Winehouse’s vocal phrasing draws on Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, and Billie Holiday while remaining unmistakably contemporary.

This 20th anniversary edition is the first time Frank has been released as a picture disc. The 2LP set is housed in a gatefold sleeve, with disc artwork using the original sleeve imagery plus photographs by Valerie Phillips from the original artwork shoot.
