The Cello Suites by Johann Sebastian Bach are the cornerstone of the solo cello repertoire, six works of extraordinary depth and variety that have challenged and inspired cellists since Pablo Casals brought them to public attention in the early twentieth century. This recording by Yo-Yo Ma, made between 1994 and 1997, represents his second traversal of the complete suites and is widely regarded as one of the definitive accounts.

Ma's playing across all six suites balances technical command with emotional warmth and a deep sense of musical architecture. The Prelude to Suite No. 1 in G major is one of the most recognisable pieces in all classical music, its flowing arpeggios opening a work of dance-like grace. Suite No. 5 in C minor is the most dramatic and inward-looking of the set, while Suite No. 6 in D major makes extraordinary technical demands with its high register writing.
