Description

Debut is the first international solo studio album by Icelandic artist Björk, released in 1993 on One Little Indian Records. Following her decade with post-punk group The Sugarcubes, it announced Björk as a fully singular presence in contemporary music — a record that drew equally from electronic pop, jazz, house, classical music and pure sonic experimentation, held together by a voice of extraordinary power and expressiveness. Co-produced with Nellee Hooper, it was recorded in London and became an immediate critical and commercial landmark, reaching number three in the UK Albums Chart.

The album opens with "Human Behaviour", its tribal percussion and orchestral strings establishing a sound unlike anything in the mainstream at the time. "Venus as a Boy" — delicate, erotic and strangely ancient — sits alongside the euphoric "Big Time Sensuality" and the genre-collapsing "There's More to Life Than This", famously recorded live in a nightclub toilet to capture the ambient noise of the party beyond the door. "Violently Happy" and "The Anchor Song" close a debut that has since been recognised as one of the defining records of the 1990s, influencing a generation of electronic and experimental artists.
