Description
Natty Dread is the first album billed to Bob Marley & The Wailers after the departures of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer from the original trio, and the record on which Marley stepped fully into the role of frontman, bandleader and movement spokesman. Released in October 1974, it introduced the new Wailers line-up — Carlton and Aston "Family Man" Barrett holding down the rhythm section, Al Anderson on guitar, Bernard "Touter" Harvey on keyboards — and, behind the microphones, the three-part female harmony group the I Threes (Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths).
The nine-track record holds some of Marley's most quoted writing: the call-to-action Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), the social realism of No Woman, No Cry (a version that would become a global hit in its live rendering a year later), the Rasta history primer Rebel Music (3 O'Clock Road Block), and the title track Natty Dread. Basic tracks were cut at Harry J's Recording Studio in Kingston, with engineering at Island Studios and mixing at Basing Street Studios in London — a Jamaica-to-London workflow that gave the record its roots-with-international-reach production polish.
This 180g LP reissue comes from the Tuff Gong / Island Complete Island Recordings series, pressed in the Netherlands and released on 25 September 2015, and includes a download code.
