Description

Darkness on the Edge of Town is the fourth studio album by Bruce Springsteen, released on 2 June 1978 on Columbia Records. Coming three years after the commercial breakthrough of Born to Run and a protracted legal battle with former manager Mike Appel that prevented Springsteen from recording, Darkness represented a deliberate stripping away of the romantic grandeur that had defined its predecessor. In its place came something leaner, angrier and more directly connected to the lives of working people.

Recorded at Atlantic Studios in New York with the E Street Band and produced by Springsteen and Jon Landau, the album is relentlessly focused. Springsteen reportedly wrote and recorded over 50 songs during the sessions, discarding anything that felt too pop or too hopeful. What remained was a set of ten songs about people trapped by circumstance but refusing to surrender. Badlands opens the album with a fist-in-the-air declaration of defiance. Adam Raised a Cain channels raw frustration through slashing guitar. Racing in the Street is a devastating ballad about a man whose only freedom comes behind the wheel. The title track closes the album with one of Springsteen's most powerful images: a man standing at the edge of everything he knows, choosing to face the darkness rather than run from it.
