Description

Buena Vista Social Club is one of the best-selling world-music records of all time, cut across seven days at Estudios EGREM in Havana in March 1996 by a group of veteran Cuban musicians, assembled by Ry Cooder and executive producer Nick Gold. The plan had been to record a cross-cultural project with Malian musicians; when their visas failed to come through, Cooder and Gold pivoted to the Havana-based players they had been introduced to by Juan de Marcos González — some of them already in their eighties and long out of the studio.

The record that resulted is a modern classic of Cuban son and bolero, named after the members' club of the 1940s and 50s where many of the musicians had originally played. It brought global attention to Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, Rubén González, Omara Portuondo and Eliades Ochoa, won the 1998 Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Performance, and spawned Wim Wenders's Oscar-nominated documentary film of the same name. Tracks like Chan Chan, Dos Gardenias, El Cuarto De Tula and Candela became globally familiar.

This World Circuit 2×LP reissue presents the album across four sides in a gatefold sleeve on 180g vinyl, pressed in Germany, mastered by Bernie Grundman and adapted for vinyl by iwant design.
