Description
Marcus Garvey is the defining album by Burning Spear (Winston Rodney), a roots reggae record of extraordinary spiritual power that pays tribute to the Jamaican national hero and Pan-African leader Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Recorded at Harry J Studio in Kingston and produced by Jack Ruby, the album's deep, hypnotic grooves and Rodney's impassioned vocals made it one of the most important records of the roots reggae era.
The title track Marcus Garvey builds around a mesmerising bass line and a repeated vocal invocation that carries the force of prophecy. Slavery Days asks "Do you remember the days of slavery?" with a directness that made it a permanent fixture of Jamaican consciousness. Red, Gold and Green celebrates Rastafarian colours over a gentle, swaying rhythm. Old Marcus Garvey and Tradition continue the album's meditation on African heritage and spiritual resistance. The rhythm section of Robbie Shakespeare and Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace provides a foundation of deep, rolling bass and crisp drumming.
