Description

Human After All: Remixes is the companion album to Daft Punk's third studio record Human After All — released on 14 March 2005 via Virgin Records to mixed reviews, but retrospectively elevated to cult status following the overwhelming success of the duo's Alive 2006/2007 world tour, which built many of its most celebrated moments from the album's dense, repetitive structures. The remix album was released on 29 March 2006 exclusively in Japan on CD — gathering reworkings from some of the most significant names in European electronic music at that moment — and remained a Japan-only release until a limited expanded edition appeared there in June 2014, adding four new remixes and eventually reaching streaming services internationally in August of that year. This 2025 pressing marks the first time the complete collection has been released on vinyl, anywhere in the world.

The remixers represent a remarkable snapshot of the mid-2000s French and European electronic underground. Justice — then just beginning the ascent that would culminate in their landmark debut in 2007 — contribute a churning, guitar-and-distortion rework of "Human After All" that was already circulating on bootleg before the official release and remains one of the era's most celebrated remixes. Soulwax open the album with a thunderous rework of "Robot Rock". SebastiAn — another Ed Banger Records associate — takes the title track into darker, more industrial territory. Peaches brings confrontational electro-clash energy to "Technologic"; Erol Alkan constructs a cavernous Horrorhouse Dub from "The Brainwasher"; and Para One delivers what many regard as the finest track on the entire collection — a sinuous, deeply melodic rework of "The Prime Time of Your Life" that anticipates the direction French electronic music would take across the following decade. The 2014 additions — Basement Jaxx, The Juan Maclean, Alter Ego, Vitalic, Digitalism, Liquid Twins and Le Knight Club — extend the album's range considerably, demonstrating how durable the source material had proved to be across nearly a decade of reinterpretation.

Human After All itself — produced in just six weeks from September to November 2004 using two guitars, two drum machines, a vocoder and an eight-track machine — was a deliberate departure from the meticulous sampling craft of Discovery (2001). Thomas Bangalter described it as "pure improvisation" and said it was about "fear and paranoia" and was not intended to make the listener feel good. Its minimalism and repetition divided critics at the time; the remixes, by stripping the tracks further and rebuilding them entirely, arguably revealed the album's structural strength more clearly than the originals had. The Alive 2006/2007 tour — in which these tracks were woven seamlessly into medleys alongside material from Homework and Discovery — completed the rehabilitation, and the album is now regarded as a key document in the development of the electro-house and Ed Banger sound that defined the late 2000s.

This limited edition pressing is presented on 2× 180 gram black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve, manufactured at Optimal Media GmbH in Germany. The catalogue number and barcode are identical — a standard practice on this release. An essential purchase for any collection of French electronic music, and the only vinyl edition of one of the decade's most important remix records.
