Description
Hunky Dory is the fourth studio album by David Bowie, released on 17 December 1971 on RCA Records. Though it was only a modest commercial success on release, it has since come to be recognised as one of Bowie's finest and most important works: the album where his songwriting matured into something truly distinctive, fusing glam, cabaret, folk and avant-garde art rock into a sound that was entirely his own.
Recorded at Trident Studios in London with producer Ken Scott and the musicians who would become the Spiders from Mars, Hunky Dory introduced Mick Ronson as Bowie's essential collaborator: his piano and guitar arrangements give songs like Life on Mars? and Oh! You Pretty Things a cinematic sweep that matched Bowie's lyrical ambition. Changes became one of Bowie's signature songs, its self-aware meditation on reinvention serving as both manifesto and prophecy. Kooks is a charming, tender lullaby written for his newborn son Zowie, while Queen Bitch is a strutting, Velvet Underground-influenced rocker that points directly toward the Ziggy Stardust era.
The album also includes Bowie's tribute songs to his heroes: Song for Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol and Queen Bitch (a Lou Reed homage). This 50th anniversary limited edition picture disc features the iconic Brian Ward photograph on the disc itself, with an insert and poster.
