Description

Symbolic is the sixth studio album by Death, the project led by guitarist and vocalist Chuck Schuldiner, widely regarded as the founder of death metal. By this point in the band's evolution, Schuldiner had moved far beyond the genre's early brutality into a sophisticated form of progressive metal characterised by complex arrangements, shifting time signatures and introspective lyrics.

The title track Symbolic opens with a clean guitar passage before erupting into a riff of stunning melodic precision. Crystal Mountain is one of the album's most accessible tracks, its main riff instantly memorable. Without Judgement and Misanthrope showcase the intricate interplay between Schuldiner and guitarist Bobby Koelble, while Zero Tolerance and 1,000 Eyes demonstrate the rhythm section of Kelly Conlon and Gene Hoglan at their most powerful. The album is consistently cited as one of the greatest death metal records ever made.
