Description
Holy Diver is the first album Ronnie James Dio cut after leaving Black Sabbath, and it remains the definitive statement of 1980s melodic heavy metal. Released in May 1983 on Vertigo, it introduced the line-up that would define the Dio band sound — Ronnie on vocals, Vivian Campbell on guitar, Jimmy Bain on bass and fellow ex-Sabbath alumnus Vinny Appice on drums — and produced three songs that are still live-set essentials four decades later.
The record opens with the gallop of Stand Up And Shout, moves into the title track Holy Diver with its iconic Murray demon-and-priest cover art, rides through Gypsy, Caught In The Middle and Don't Talk To Strangers, then flips the record for Straight Through The Heart, the stadium-rock cruise of Rainbow In The Dark, and the closing Shame On The Night. Self-produced by Dio, and audibly confident from first note to last.
This 2021 Mercury / UMC LP is the current remastered reissue on heavyweight vinyl, pressed in Europe.
