Description

Communiqué is Dire Straits' second album, originally released in June 1979 — little more than a year after their self-titled debut — and recorded in Nassau at Compass Point Studios with the Muscle Shoals production team of Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett. Rather than chasing the breakthrough success of "Sultans Of Swing", Mark Knopfler and the band doubled down on the taut, economical, blues-rooted pub rock that made their name, delivering a record that feels deliberately patient.

The album is built around Knopfler's fingerpicked Fender Stratocaster and his sardonic, story-telling lyrics. Side one opens with the road-weary Once Upon A Time In The West and moves through News, Where Do You Think You're Going? and Communiqué. Side two holds Lady Writer — the album's single and the track closest in spirit to "Sultans" — along with Angel Of Mercy, Portobello Belle, Single Handed Sailor and the closing Follow Me Home.

This edition is the current 180g remastered reissue on Vertigo / Mercury / UMC, pressed in Europe as part of the ongoing Dire Straits vinyl programme.
