Description

Compton is the third and reportedly final studio album by Dr. Dre, released on Aftermath and Interscope Records. Subtitled A Soundtrack by Dr. Dre, it was inspired by the making of the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton and arrived 16 years after 2001, following the indefinite shelving of the long-awaited Detox. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.

Where 2001 refined G-funk into something pristine and radio-ready, Compton pushes Dre's production into more cinematic, aggressive territory. The beats are dense and layered, drawing on orchestral arrangements, distorted bass and complex rhythmic patterns that reflect the influence of a younger generation of producers who collaborated on the album, including DJ Dahi, Focus... and Dem Jointz. The guest list is equally impressive: Talk About It and Animals feature Kendrick Lamar in blistering form, Loose Cannons brings Xzibit back into the fold, and Eminem delivers a characteristically intense verse on Medicine Man. Genocide features Marsha Ambrosius and Candice Pillay over one of the album's most menacing instrumentals, while Talking to My Diary closes the record on an introspective note.
