Description

King For A Day Fool For A Lifetime is the Faith No More record that tore up the template. Released in March 1995 on Slash / Reprise and produced by Andy Wallace with the band, it was the first album without founding guitarist Jim Martin, replaced for these sessions by Trey Spruance of Mr. Bungle. The resulting fourteen-track, seventy-minute record refuses to settle into a single genre for more than one song at a time — lurching from the frantic metal of Get Out to the hushed lounge of Evidence, from the southern-gothic sway of Take This Bottle to the hardcore thrash of Cuckoo For Caca.

Mike Patton's vocals range over the entire record — crooner, screamer, preacher, soul singer — and the band behind him are at their most deliberately unruly. The title track pairs quiet piano and soul-ballad vocals; Ricochet is one of the most direct rock singles the band ever cut; Digging The Grave is pure arena rock; and the closing Just A Man rises into a full gospel choir. Patton later called it the band's most misunderstood album; with hindsight, it's increasingly viewed as one of their best.

This Rhino reissue is a double 180g vinyl set: the main album across sides A, B and the first half of side C, then a bonus LP of rare tracks and previously unreleased versions filling out sides C and D — b-sides, the Bee Gees cover I Started A Joke, a GG Allin cover, a Spanish version of Evidence, and more. Gatefold sleeve, new liner notes by Roddy Bottum, pressed at MPO.
