Description

Zombie is the most politically explosive album by Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the Nigerian musician, bandleader and activist who created Afrobeat by fusing Yoruba rhythms, highlife, jazz and funk into a powerful vehicle for social commentary. The album's savage satire of the Nigerian military provoked a violent reprisal by government soldiers, who attacked Fela's Kalakuta Republic compound, injuring Fela and killing his mother.

The album consists of two extended tracks. Zombie occupies the entire first side, its relentless rhythm and chanted vocal mocking soldiers who follow orders without thinking. The song became an anthem of resistance across Africa and beyond. Tony Allen's drumming is the engine of the performance, his polyrhythmic patterns locking with the bass and rhythm guitars to create a groove of hypnotic, unstoppable power. The horn section of Africa 70 stabs and swirls across the top. Mister Follow Follow on the second side continues the attack on mindless obedience.
