Gal Costa is the self-titled debut solo album by the Bahian singer who became one of the defining voices of the Tropicalia movement and Brazilian popular music (MPB). Released in 1969, the album captures the radical creative energy of the Tropicalia era, blending bossa nova, psychedelic rock, avant-garde experimentation and traditional Brazilian music into something entirely new.

The album opens with Nao Identificado, a Caetano Veloso composition that sets the tone with its blend of delicacy and strangeness. Namorinho de Portao showcases Costa's extraordinary vocal range and her ability to move between tenderness and raw power. Songs by Veloso and Gilberto Gil sit alongside material by Roberto Carlos and Jorge Ben Jor, all filtered through the Tropicalia aesthetic of irreverent creativity. Costa's voice -- capable of extraordinary warmth, experimental shrieking and everything in between -- remains one of the most remarkable instruments in Brazilian music.
