Description
Gilberto Gil's self-titled 1971 album was recorded in London during his exile from Brazil under the military dictatorship. Stripped of the full-band Tropicalia arrangements of his earlier work, the album is spare and intimate, built around Gil's acoustic guitar and voice with minimal accompaniment from bassist Chris Bonett. The result is one of the most personal and musically adventurous records in Gil's catalogue, drawing on folk rock, blues and psychedelia while remaining rooted in Brazilian song.
The album opens with Nega (Photograph Blues) and includes a striking acoustic interpretation of Steve Winwood's Can't Find My Way Home. Volkswagen Blues and Crazy Pop Rock show Gil's ear for playful genre-blending, while Mamma is among the most tender recordings in his discography. This Klimt Records reissue adds two bonus tracks -- Up From The Skies and Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band -- and is pressed on 180 gram transparent beer coloured vinyl. Produced by Ralph Mace and engineered by John Iles.
