This Vinyl Passion Classical LP gathers Glenn Gould's early recordings of Beethoven's final three piano sonatas — Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109; Sonata No. 31 in A-flat major, Op. 110; and Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111. Cut for Columbia Masterworks in 1956, these are Gould just after his epoch-making Goldberg Variations debut, turning the same clarity, contrapuntal rigour and unhurried line onto Beethoven's late style.

Where so many pianists treat Op. 109, 110 and 111 as a single valedictory statement — the late Beethoven "farewell" trilogy — Gould insists on the counterpoint. The fugal writing of Op. 110 and the boogie-woogie ghost of Op. 111's Arietta second movement are articulated with that famously dry, sectioned touch, and the result sits in its own category in the Beethoven discography.
