Maiden Voyage is Herbie Hancock's fifth album as a leader and, by general agreement, one of the finest jazz records ever made — a masterpiece of the mid-1960s modal and post-bop tradition that has lost none of its power or mystery in the six decades since its recording. Recorded in March 1965 for Blue Note with a quintet that again included Freddie Hubbard and Ron Carter, with George Coleman on tenor saxophone and Tony Williams on drums, the album was conceived as a suite of compositions unified by the sea as theme and metaphor, each track named for a different aspect of the ocean.

The title track is one of the most beautiful piano compositions in the jazz canon — a melody built on suspended chords that creates a sense of perpetual forward motion, of weightlessness, of water; it has been covered and adapted by artists from Herbie Mann to the Brand New Heavies and remains a touchstone of the modal jazz approach at its most lyrical. "Dolphin Dance", "The Eye of the Hurricane", and "Survival of the Fittest" demonstrate equally the range of Hancock's compositional imagination, from hushed intimacy to turbulent intensity.
