Moanin' in the Moonlight is the debut album by Howlin' Wolf, compiling his earliest and most raw Chess Records singles into one collection. These recordings capture Wolf at his most primal, his enormous voice and harmonica playing backed by the lean, electrified sound of his Memphis and early Chicago bands.

Smokestack Lightnin' is the album's centrepiece and one of the most hypnotic recordings in blues history, built on a single, relentless riff. Moanin' at Midnight opens with Wolf's eerie howl. How Many More Years and Evil Is Going On showcase the driving intensity of his early sound, while I'm Leavin' You demonstrates his ability to channel raw emotion into a performance.
