Hot Buttered Soul is the second studio album by Isaac Hayes, the record that transformed him from a behind-the-scenes songwriter and session musician at Stax Records into one of the most distinctive artists in popular music. With just four tracks spread across two sides, the album broke every rule of commercial soul, expanding songs into extended orchestral suites that anticipated the long-form explorations of progressive rock and electronic music.

Walk on By stretches Burt Bacharach's pop hit across twelve minutes, Hayes's deep spoken-word intro giving way to a slowly building arrangement that layers strings, wah-wah guitar and a relentless rhythmic groove. Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic is a funky, improvised workout driven by Hayes's electric organ. By the Time I Get to Phoenix begins with an eighteen-minute spoken-word monologue before reaching Jimmy Webb's melody. One Woman is the album's most conventional track, a tender ballad that nevertheless carries the album's expansive spirit.
