Live at the Apollo is the album that made James Brown a superstar, recorded during a performance at the Apollo Theater in Harlem on 24 October 1962. King Records owner Syd Nathan initially refused to fund the recording, believing a live album would not sell. Brown financed it himself. It spent 66 weeks on the Billboard album chart and remained the blueprint for live soul and funk recordings for decades.

The album captures Brown and the Famous Flames at the height of their performing powers, the energy between band and audience creating an atmosphere of almost unbearable intensity. The medley of I'll Go Crazy, Try Me and Think builds to a frenzy. Lost Someone stretches across nearly eleven minutes, Brown improvising vocal variations over a hypnotic groove, holding the audience in the palm of his hand. The performance demonstrated that Brown was not merely a recording artist but one of the greatest live performers in the history of popular music.
