Description

The Payback is a double album by James Brown that represents the deepest, funkiest music of his career. Originally conceived as the soundtrack for the blaxploitation film Hell Up in Harlem, the music was rejected by the film's producers for being too dark and intense. Brown released it as a standalone album, and it became one of his most acclaimed works.

The title track The Payback runs to nearly eight minutes of slow, menacing funk driven by a minimal two-chord vamp and Brown's most intense vocal performance. Doing the Best I Can and Take Some... Leave Some showcase the JBs rhythm section at their tightest and most hypnotic. Stoned to the Bone is a relentless groove workout. Mind Power and Time Is Running Out Fast extend the album's dark, heavy atmosphere across two LPs of uncompromising funk.
