Description
Continuum represents the moment John Mayer stepped decisively away from the polished pop rock of his earlier albums and announced himself as a serious musician in the blues and soul tradition. His third studio album, recorded between November 2005 and September 2006, was produced in partnership with drummer Steve Jordan — a veteran collaborator of Keith Richards and the Blues Brothers — and features a core rhythm section completed by bassist Pino Palladino, whose supple, understated playing had already graced records by D'Angelo, The Who, and Paul Simon. The album's sound was shaped across four studios: The Village Recorder in Los Angeles, Avatar Studios and Right Track Recording in New York City, and Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee — the latter lending a direct connection to the soul and blues heritage Mayer was drawing from.
The album was both a critical and commercial success of considerable scale. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, held back only by Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds in the same release week, and went on to sell over four million copies in the United States alone and more than five million worldwide. At the 2007 Grammy Awards it won Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for the opening track 'Waiting on the World to Change'. Rolling Stone named it one of the best albums of 2006 and later placed it on their updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
The record moves fluidly between blues-inflected guitar workouts, intimate singer-songwriter confessionals, and slow-burning soul. 'Gravity' and 'Vultures', both previously recorded live with the John Mayer Trio on Try!, receive definitive studio treatments here. 'Slow Dancing in a Burning Room' showcases Mayer's guitar playing at its most expressive and controlled, while 'Stop This Train' — a meditation on the passage of time and the fear of losing one's parents — became one of the most emotionally resonant songs of his career. The album closes with a studio recording of Jimi Hendrix's 'Bold as Love', Mayer's first recorded Hendrix cover, and the bonus track 'Say', written for the film The Bucket List.
This Music On Vinyl reissue, pressed in Europe on 180 gram audiophile vinyl and released in April 2010, presents the album across two records in the label's characteristic plain white gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves containing full lyrics and photographs. The mastering on the original album was handled by Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, New York City, with mixing split between Manny Marroquin and Michael Brauer.
