Herbert von Karajan's Berliner Philharmoniker reading of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55 "Eroica" remains one of the cornerstone recordings in the Deutsche Grammophon Beethoven canon. The "Eroica" is the symphony that broke the 18th-century mould — originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte before Beethoven famously scratched out the inscription — and the opening two E-flat hammer chords announce a new scale of ambition for the symphonic form.

Across four movements — the sweeping opening Allegro con brio, the extraordinary Marcia funebre (one of the most famous slow movements in the repertoire), the taut Scherzo, and a finale built on variations of Beethoven's own earlier ballet theme — Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic produce the broad-shouldered, burnished orchestral sound that came to define the Karajan Beethoven cycles.
