Description

Gustav Holst's The Planets is the most widely recorded English orchestral work of the twentieth century — seven movements, one for each of the astrologically personified planets (Earth is conspicuously absent, Pluto not yet discovered). Holst drew on eastern mysticism, astrological archetypes and pre-war English musical expansiveness to produce a suite that has since cast a long shadow over film and game scoring in particular.

Karajan's Vienna Philharmonic recording has long been regarded as one of the definitive readings: the opening bass ostinato of Mars, The Bringer Of War famously locks into Holst's 5/4 tattoo; Venus, The Bringer Of Peace is held with glassy stillness; Jupiter, The Bringer Of Jollity contains the "Thaxted" hymn theme that became I Vow To Thee, My Country; and the suite closes on the female wordless chorus fading into silence across Neptune, The Mystic.
