Discipline is the eighth studio album by King Crimson and the first with the radically reconfigured line-up of Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Bill Bruford. After a seven-year hiatus, Fripp reconceived the band entirely, replacing the symphonic grandeur of 1970s Crimson with interlocking polyrhythmic guitar patterns, Belew's new wave-influenced vocals and the extraordinary sonic palette of Levin's Chapman Stick.

The title track Discipline is a tour de force of interlocking guitar lines, Fripp and Belew's parts phasing in and out of alignment with mathematical precision over Bruford and Levin's rock-solid pulse. Elephant Talk opens the album with Belew's talking-guitar effects and an infectious, angular groove. Frame by Frame pairs two independent guitar parts that weave together with dizzying complexity. Matte Kudasai provides a moment of calm beauty, Belew's treated guitar creating ambient textures beneath his vocal. Thela Hun Ginjeet is built around a menacing, dissonant riff and a spoken-word narrative. Indiscipline alternates between quiet tension and explosive release. The album stands as one of the most innovative rock records of the 1980s.
