Description
Korn's 1994 self-titled debut is the record on which the band walked into the studio as a Bakersfield five-piece with a bassist playing a five-string Ibanez in drop tuning and walked out having invented nu-metal. Produced by Ross Robinson at Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, the album fused downtuned seven-string guitars, slap-heavy bass, Jonathan Davis's unguarded vocal delivery — alternately a whisper, a scream and a full-throated bagpipe on Shoots And Ladders — and confessional lyrics that went places metal had largely kept out of.
From the opening Blind — built on James "Munky" Shaffer and Brian "Head" Welch's interlocking tritone guitars and Davis's famous "Are you ready?" — through Ball Tongue, Need To, Clown, the abuse-survivor devastation of Daddy, and the already-cited Shoots And Ladders, the record set a template that the next decade of heavy music would borrow from relentlessly. It went double platinum in the US without a radio hit. The final side closes with Michael And Geri — an unlisted tape of an overheard argument that Robinson stitched on to the end of Daddy; the record's final, uncomfortable punctuation.
This Music On Vinyl 180g 2×LP reissue gives the album the audiophile cut it deserves, pressed at Record Industry in the Netherlands.
