Description

Radio-Activity is the fifth studio album from Kraftwerk, originally released in October 1975 on Kling Klang and Capitol Records. It marked a decisive shift in the group’s direction — away from the experimental rock of their early records and towards the purely electronic sound that would define their subsequent work. The album takes radio and electromagnetic transmission as its central theme, structuring twelve short pieces around the idea of invisible signals moving through air and space. The German and English editions were released simultaneously, with Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider recording separate vocal takes in each language.

The record sits at the hinge point of Kraftwerk’s catalogue — preceding the full mechanised precision of Trans-Europe Express and The Man-Machine, but already deploying the synthesisers, vocoders, and sequencers that would make those records so influential. Radioactivity builds from a simple melodic sequence into a meditation on radiation and transmission that has become one of the group’s signature works. Ohm Sweet Ohm closes the album with an unhurried drift that anticipates ambient music’s later development.

This 2020 Special Edition reissue is pressed at 180g on yellow translucent vinyl by Optimal Media GmbH, released through Parlophone under licence from Kling Klang. It is the English-language edition of the album.
