Born This Way is the second studio album by Lady Gaga — Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta — released on 23 May 2011 on Streamline and Interscope Records, and one of the fastest-selling and most commercially dominant albums of the 2010s. Recorded across multiple studios including The Living Room Studios in Oslo, Abbey Road Studios in London, Germano Studios in New York and on Gaga's touring bus during the Monster Ball tour, and executive produced by Vincent Herbert for Streamline Records, the album drew on an extraordinarily wide range of producers: RedOne — who had helmed The Fame and The Fame Monster — returned for several tracks, alongside Fernando Garibay, DJ White Shadow, Clarence Coffee Jr., Brian Kierulf and others. Mixed by Tony Maserati at RMC Studio, Los Angeles, and mastered at Sterling Sound, New York City, the album was designed from the outset as a maximalist statement: louder, bigger, more sonically aggressive and more lyrically direct than anything Gaga had released before.

The album's lead single "Born This Way" was released on 11 February 2011 and broke records on impact: it debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with the largest first-week sales total for a digital single at the time — over one million downloads in five days — and reached number one in over twenty countries. The album itself debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 1.108 million copies — making Gaga only the second artist in Nielsen SoundScan history to have two albums debut above one million copies in their first week — and topped the charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland and numerous other territories. It was certified Platinum in the UK and multi-Platinum in the US and has sold over six million copies worldwide. The album was later included in Rolling Stone's updated list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Across its 17 tracks the album moves through hard rock-influenced anthem pop ("Government Hooker", "Heavy Metal Lover", "Electric Chapel"), euphoric dance-pop ("Judas", "Marry the Night", "The Edge of Glory"), gospel-influenced balladry ("You and I", "Bloody Mary"), and the kind of ecstatic floor-filling pop that had defined her debut — all filtered through a thematic framework of self-acceptance, identity, sexuality and unconditional love that Gaga articulated with both sincerity and theatrical conviction. "The Edge of Glory" — featuring a Clarence Clemons saxophone solo recorded just weeks before his death in June 2011 — became one of the album's most enduring tracks. "Judas", "Hair" and "You and I" all charted as singles, and the album's commercial and cultural impact was amplified by Gaga's concurrent status as the most-followed person on Twitter and one of the most visible public figures in popular culture.
