Description

Mothership is the definitive Led Zeppelin greatest hits collection — 24 tracks personally selected by Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones to represent the full arc of the band's eight studio albums, from their self-titled debut in 1969 through to In Through the Out Door in 1979. Originally released in 2007 to coincide with the band's reunion concert at the O2 Arena in London, it debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the US Billboard 200, and remains the most comprehensive and authoritative single-collection entry point into the Led Zeppelin catalogue. This 2015 vinyl edition presents the album on four 180 gram LPs, with remastering supervised personally by Jimmy Page using the new 2014/15 96kHz/24-bit masters developed during his comprehensive campaign to restore the entire Zeppelin catalogue from the original analogue tapes — the same source used for the acclaimed 2014 individual album reissues.

The tracklist spans the full breadth of Led Zeppelin's influence: the incendiary blues-rock of the debut LP ("Good Times Bad Times", "Communication Breakdown", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You"); the defining hard rock of Led Zeppelin II ("Whole Lotta Love", "Heartbreaker", "Ramble On"); the pastoral and heavy dynamics of III and IV ("Since I've Been Loving You", "Black Dog", "When the Levee Breaks", "Stairway to Heaven"); the experimental and melodic expansions of Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti ("The Song Remains the Same", "No Quarter", "Trampled Under Foot", "Kashmir"); and the late-period authority of Presence and In Through the Out Door ("Achilles Last Stand", "Nobody's Fault But Mine", "In the Evening", "All My Love"). The sequencing is chronological, allowing the collection to function simultaneously as a hits package and as a compressed biography of one of the most consequential bodies of work in rock music.

Led Zeppelin — Page, Plant, Jones and drummer John Bonham — formed in London in 1968 from the remnants of The Yardbirds, recording their debut album in just 36 hours. Over eleven years and eight studio albums they redefined the possibilities of rock, drawing on electric blues, folk, Eastern music, psychedelia and hard rock in ways that directly established the vocabulary of heavy metal, arena rock and alternative music. Bonham's death in September 1980 brought the band to an immediate end; the three surviving members have declined every subsequent reunion offer except the one-off 2007 O2 concert. Led Zeppelin have sold over 300 million albums worldwide, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.

This box set is housed in a deluxe archival two-piece box with individually jacketed records, a 20-page full-colour booklet with liner notes by rock critic David Fricke, and embossed artwork designed by noted Los Angeles artist Shepard Fairey. A front sticker confirms: "The Very Best of Led Zeppelin — Remastering Supervised by Jimmy Page — Using the New 2014/2015 96kHz/24-bit Masters on Four 180-Gram LPs." An essential purchase and an impeccable physical presentation of the greatest rock catalogue of the 20th century.
