Originally released on 24 October 2000, it draws on his first five studio albums to compile fifteen tracks that showcase the full breadth of his genre-defying talent: a singular fusion of rock, funk, soul, R&B and psychedelia that drew equally on Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, John Lennon and Marvin Gaye while remaining entirely, unmistakably his own.

The compilation achieved massive commercial success worldwide, going 3× Platinum and reaching number 2 on the US Billboard 200, number 1 in Germany and Austria, and number 12 in the UK. It introduced an entire new generation to tracks that had already become modern classics: the irresistible funk-rock of "Are You Gonna Go My Way" — one of the great debut singles in rock history; the euphoric, Grammy-winning "Fly Away"; the tender, slow-burning "It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over"; and the swaggering, riff-driven "Always On The Run", recorded with Slash of Guns N' Roses.
