Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is the fifth studio album by Lucinda Williams, released on 30 June 1998 on Mercury Records. It won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album and is widely regarded as one of the finest Americana records ever made. The album took three years and multiple producers to complete, with sessions at studios in Nashville, Austin and Los Angeles, but the result was a record of remarkable cohesion and emotional power.

Williams' songwriting is rooted in the landscapes and emotional textures of the American South. Right in Time is a slow-burning, sensual masterpiece. Drunken Angel opens the album with a raw elegy for the late songwriter Blaze Foley. Lake Charles and Jackson are vivid, place-specific narratives that conjure the humidity, heartbreak and restless motion of Southern life. Concrete and Barbed Wire is stark and devastating, while Joy closes the album with hard-won defiance.

The production, finally completed by Roy Bittan and Steve Earle among others, balances country, rock, folk and blues into something that feels effortlessly natural. This indie exclusive reissue on Mercury/UMe is pressed on 180g yellow vinyl.
