Description

West Side Soul is the debut album by Magic Sam (Sam Maghett) and one of the defining records of the West Side Chicago blues school. Where the South Side sound of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf was rooted in the Mississippi Delta, the West Side style was younger, more energetic and influenced by rock and soul, with a thinner, more stinging guitar tone.

Magic Sam's playing is fleet, precise and emotionally direct. All Your Love opens with a Latin-tinged guitar figure that became widely imitated. I Need You So Bad and Sweet Home Chicago demonstrate his powerful, soulful vocals. Looking Good and That's All I Need showcase his uptempo, trebly guitar attack. Sam died at just 32, making this album and its follow-up his only studio legacy -- and a towering one.
