Description

Mahler's Symphony No. 5 is one of the towering works of the orchestral repertoire, a vast emotional journey that moves from funeral march to triumphant finale across five movements and over an hour of music. This recording features Paavo Jarvi conducting the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich on Alpha Classics.

The symphony opens with a stark trumpet fanfare leading into a devastating funeral march. The stormy second movement gives way to the massive, complex Scherzo at the work's centre. The famous Adagietto -- scored for strings and harp alone, and later used by Visconti in Death in Venice -- is one of the most beautiful slow movements in all symphonic music, a love letter from Mahler to his wife Alma. The Rondo-Finale brings the symphony to a blazing, contrapuntal conclusion. Jarvi's interpretation balances structural clarity with emotional intensity.
